David Beckham may still be one of the most successful stars in terms of endorsement deals but, when it comes to doing the thing that launched him, namely playing soccer, he’s nothing short of a “catastrophe.” In a scathing piece, Maxim magazine named the British star the biggest flop America has seen in years, if not actually ever, as the Daily Mail informs.

Beckham’s move to the LA Galaxy on a contract on no less than £125m was supposed to revive interest in the sport, but, in return, it proved to be a very poor decision, Maxim says. Supporters are not happy with his performance on the field, constantly booing and verbally attacking him, which makes it clear that his transfer with the team was literally money down the drain.

In a top ten of the biggest “busts, choke artists,” David Beckham came at number one for being the biggest sports flop of all times, Maxim says. “Three seasons into what was supposed to be the magic bullet that finally made soccer relevant (i.e. profitable, interesting, televised) in the U.S., David Beckham’s much publicized move to MLS and his grotesquely huge contract are nothing short of a catastrophe.” the US magazine writes, as cited by the aforementioned British publication.

“The magazine highlights the recent pitch confrontation between the 35-year-old former Manchester United star and fans who were angry at his part time move to AC Milan. Beckham was jeered and booed when he returned to the team after a spell on loan to the top Italian side. The magazine points outs that attendances at LA Galaxy games are down by nearly 25 per cent – and the team wins more frequently when Beckham is not in the starting line up.” the Daily Mail further says of the Maxim piece.

There is one thing, however, that Beckham is still good at and that’s that “he still looks good in his skivvies,” Maxim says, referring to his successful collaboration with Armani for the men’s lingerie line. Unfortunately, that too will soon become a thing of the past, as Beckham has officially been replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo, who will be featured in the upcoming Spring 2010 campaign.
